The English & Writing pathway offers rigorous, high-level courses in the craft of writing and tools of analysis for students who are serious about the humanities.
English & Writing courses leverage instructors’ deep knowledge and expertise to help students build confidence in their writing and introduce or reinforce different writing techniques.
Our approach is to not only provide students with high-level instruction but also help them apply their learning through ambitious projects, including 10- to 20-page bodies of work and submissions to writing contests.
Coursework that works
Exploring Essay Writing, The Personal Narrative Essay
Students develop their writing skills in a longer project that is as ambitious as it is fun. The chapter autobiography provides a really unique, guided opportunity for students to tackle a longer form project, allowing young writers to gain confidence and stretch their abilities in a way that simply can’t be replicated by the shorter compositions they are typically assigned at school.
Exploring Persuasive Essay Writing, Cultural Analysis
Why do so many people love Frozen, and Fortnite, and ASMR videos? How do K-pop and Bollywood affect Asian American representation? Taking a deep look at the trends and cultural objects that surround them, students learn to craft innovative arguments by writing sociocultural commentaries. In addition to becoming more persuasive writers, students grow into more informed readers and creative, original thinkers.
The History Paper
Students learn, once and for all, how to write a research paper—which will be required in advanced and AP courses in the humanities. (History, English, Psychology, etc.) This class teaches students everything from the rules, formatting, and methodology of a standard research paper to content-related considerations: how to write a thesis, how to support an argument, etc. The writing course with the most direct academic application.
